Make-up Monday…

Only Nineties kids will remember applying their lipstick and kohl in the back of a cab, or on the Tube, a little cag-handed and rarely with a mirror to hand. Make-up looked lived-in, and messy in a special glam-rock way. If you could channel Debbie Harry's midnight kebab stop look on a Saturday night, you oozed some serious cool.

Fast forward to today's massively digitally influenced rituals, think Kardashian contour videos and 12-step smokey eye tutorials, which have gone some way to producing symmetrical, predictable faces that look almost fem-bot.

Thankfully, AW17 is set to see something of a false-perfection backlash. Why not take a break from obsessive blending and precision, and go for something a little rough around the edges… yep, crap-plication is the newest emerging beauty trend!

Distressed Kohl…

Pile a kohl liner all around and into your lash lines, taking it outward until it looks like an undone Bardot wing. You can easily achieve this in seconds by smoking out the kohl with a small smudger brush.

For a darker, more dramatic take on this look, you can break up the black using an eyeshadow brush to paint any excess over the lids and outwards for a sooty halo. Rubbing the lids with your finger adds more destruction. Apply some black mascara for lash definition. Keep lips bare and natural.

Kohl picks…

L'Oreal Paris Infallible Gel Crayon in Back To Black, £4.99

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Black Bean,
£5.50

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in Black Velvet, £15.50

Socket to them…

Vibe? Applied in the back of a car that drove over a speed bump. Generously trace your top lashes with some bright pot eyeliner with your eyes closed. Then, open wide while the liner is still wet. Hey, presto, half the colour will transfer into your creases. Line your bottom lashline equally as thick, but don't join up the lines at the corners. To avoid a clown face, strip back the rest of your make-up. A bit of leftover looking lip stain is all you need.

Bold pot eyeliner picks…

MAC Chromaline pot eyeliners in Hi-Def Cyan and Primary Yellow, £16.50 each – you could blend these two together for a fun looking "pea-soup" shade!

Stila Smudge Pot in Electric Blue £13

NYX Gel Liner and Smudger in Teal, £8

Steamed Liner …

This swampy eye look is meant to look like you slept with your eyeliner on. Alternatively, apply a generous amount of pot or pencil liner along the lower lash line and dot the same colour between the top lashes. Fuzz the lower line downwards with a smudger brush, so it looks like you've been in the sauna with your make-up on. Dabbing some metallic pigment powder in the same colour on top of the lines will set them and add some depth. Skip mascara, and brush your brows upwards with brow gel. Good morning!

Steamed Liner Picks…

Smashbox Always On Gel Liner in Baller, £18

MAC Pigment in Emerald Green, £16

Max-Cara…

To paraphrase Dolly Parton, it takes a lot of effort for mascara to look this cheap. Curl your lashes and then paint your lashes almost individually with the tip of your wand, blobbing on the colour and then separating the lashes. Do this repeatedly until you think you're done, then apply more. To finish off, drag the wand back and forth through your lashes. Now do all this again with your lower lashes!

Max-Cara picks…

NYX Coloured Mascara, £6

Kiko Smart Coloured Mascara, £5.90

Snogged Off…

Remember being 16 and being able to kiss for two hours straight before appearing with the most beautiful, rebellious looking stained lip? Well, this is what you're going for now. Use your finger to press a matte lipstick onto your lips, then blot this to create the stained look. If you want to blur the edges, an eyeshadow brush is ideal. To make lips look licked, top with a clear gloss in the centre. Alternatively, slick on one of the new glossy lip stains that do all this for you. Feel free to do the actual snogging, too!

Snogged Off Picks…

YSL Glossy Stain, £26

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain, £7.99

Safe to say I have fallen in love with LA make-up brand Colourpop. Not only do they have an extensive range of velvety soft satin lip colours and the best collection of matte and shimmer eyeshadows and face powders ever, they recently launched their No Filter concealers, and an impressive set of sleek, professional brushes, which would be great for blending their ultra-wearable bronzers and Super Shock Highlighters.
If you want a pop of Colourpop in your life, check out their website!

Aura, the new fragrance by Mugler. I would love to try this as I just love the mysterious Mugler perfumes, and I love Alien – my fave! Aura has a combination of sweet, vanilla, woody and white florals which work in a somewhat whimsical way. This is something I've always loved about Mugler, their fragrances have an unexpected mixture of notes which makes their fragrances as individual as the person wearing them and they don't smell overly floral or girly.

Lipstick Queen in Saint Sheer – I have never tried anything in this lipstick brand, founded by lipstick lover Poppy King. Saint Sheer looks like the perfect pinky nude for everyday, a shade you could wear all year round.

Greek brand Korres have the best body lotions I've ever used. Body Milks boast an ultra hydrating formula that sinks into the skin leaving it silky soft all day. Japanese Rose is a beautiful oriental scent. You won't be able to miss the eclectic product packaging!

Sally Hansen's new Colour Therapy range has just launched, complete with rose gold lids to top off their generous bottles. The colour range boasts some beautiful jewel tones for Fall and some duochromes like Reflection Pool, a greenish blue shade colour flip that I really want to try! It reminds me of some of the Aquarium colours Barry M launched a couple of years back.

Beauty Tuesday…

If you thought there were little or no uber-cool make-up brands that were vegan and/or cruelty free, think again…

Some of you may be pleasantly surprised. The 3 brands with some of the most sought after trend products are. NYX, Colourpop and Dose Of Colors!

The beauty trend circuit has seen a huge boom in velvet matte lips, sparkly smoky-eyes and prismatic highlighted cheekbones, and they're here to slay for a good while.

Colurpop and Dose Of Colors, both popular US brands, are very well known for their silky matte lip offerings. Liquid Matte Lipstick from Dose Of Colors is highly sought after, especially the shade Stone, a suits-all pinky nude shade.

The 90's brown lip isn't going anywhere, at the SS17 shows there were some new takes on the trend. Moschino precisely lined lips and filled them in with a matte pale tan. Creamy mahogany was spotted at Blumarine, which was complimented with peachy eyes. A russet coloured lipstick blurred at the edges was the look of choice for Rocksanda.

There are plenty of matte, satin, creamy and gloss options to help you relive the look, Colourpop has some right corkers!

Ultra Satin Lip in Mess Around – a mid-tone greige with brown undertones.

Ultra Matte Lip in Embellish – a darker, blackened brown.

Ultra Glossy Lip in Cheat Code – a sheer metallic, brown copper.

Lippie Stix in Kapish – a dusty warm brown.

NYX, with their seemingly endless variety of liquid lip products, have captured the trend perfectly, too!

Lip Lingerie, a straight up dupe for Kylie's Lip Kits, have just extended their shade range. Good news if you were looking for Bustier and Cashmere Silk. Honeymoon is also the ultimate brown lip shade.

Soft Matte Lip Creams are also a popular NYX buy, you can never have too many!

Tuesday… Hues-day!

I can’t be the only one who only has to look at something deep sea blue on scorching days like this to instantly think of refreshing, cooling treats.

Some of my favourite Summertime Blues: Victoria’s Secret Aqua Kiss, Mavala Cyclades Blue, Nails Inc Special Effects in Fitzroy Square, Barry M Molten Metals, Mavala Blue Curucao and Maui Moisture Coconut Milk Weightless Oil Mist

Curucao, an ocean inspired blue shade inspired by its namesake Caribbean island, is the type of summer blue that goes swimmingly well with poolside afternoons well spent at your favourite holiday destination.

Essie’s Beach Bum Blu, a pale metallic teal, is one of those nail colours that always evokes memories of Mediterranean adventures to Spanish and Greek Islands.

Mavala’s Curucao Blue is similar. It’s a stunning aqua blue with slight a shimmer finish. Whether you’re rocking out at an electric festival or chilling by the sea, this bold teal is just ideal for summer, so is the similar Cyclades Blue, which is more of a Santorini inspired, dreamy blue.

Victoria’s Secret Fragrance Mists have been getting a lot of use this Summer; Aqua Kiss has to be my favourite. It’s the most refreshing blend of Rain Kissed Freesia and Daisy that instantly revitalises.

Maui Moisture, the next big thing in eco-friendly, beautifully packaged haircare, boasts one of the lightest, hair hydrators around. Made with 100% pure aloe juice, coconut milk, mango butter and guava oil, one spritz of this paraben free formula will quench thirsty strands without weighing hair down.

US brand Maui Moisture is the latest feel-good, sulphate free, paraben free haircare line to use 100% aloe juice as the first ingredient in their products. Maui are Eco-friendly and suitable for vegans, too. With a shampoo, conditioner, hair mask and oil mist sprays that cater to every hair need, the products also boast a delicious tropical smell you won’t be able to resist.  The good news is, you don’t have to go all the way to Maui to get your hands on some much needed hydration for your locks, Maui Moisture has just landed in larger Boots stores.  The Heal and Hydrate shampoo and conditioner, which comes in beautiful popping pink bottles, is the perfect pick me up for your mane if you blow dry and straighten regularly.

NYX have rolled out the Cosmic Metals Eyeshadow Palette, which consists of six versatile, metallic neutrals in shades of gold, copper, and dark plum.  Each of these shadows loads eyelids with crisp, metallic colour with an incredible colour payoff.  Metallic eyes and lips are a big beauty trend right now, and it’s easy to see the shades in this palette have been inspired by the much loved Cosmic Metals lip creams.

Another make-up look that has really had a boom recently has been highlighting and strobing.  There are some amazing illuminators on the market that will help you achieve the glow of the unicorns!  NYX, always up to date with the latest beauty trends, have jumped on the bandwagon with their Duo Chromatic Illuminator powders.  Available in five light-catching shades, these highlighters are formulated with duochromatic pearls that will create a luminous glow that looks different from every angle.

Swept across the highest points of the face, like cheekbones, bridge of your nose and Cupid’s bow, NYX Duo Chromatic Illuminators will guarantee you an ethereal, lit from within glow in no time.

Still on the quest for the perfect unicorn inspired make-up brushes?  Look no further than I Heart Make-up.  They’ve just bought out a limited edition 5 brush set, complete with Insta-worthy multicolour hairs and pearly horn shaped handles that pack plenty of pearl duochrome.  These are currently £20 in Boots, and on the TAM Beauty website for £14.99 (www.tambeauty.com).

With Summer well in full swing, it’s time to switch winter darks and spring pastel nail shades for some of the boldest, most vivid nail colours around.  The summer brights from Swiss brand Mavala will ensure your manis and pedis are on point with some juicy hues for July.  Inspired by popular holiday resorts, Cyclades Blue, Smily Orange, Blue Curaçao and Aruba will compliment your vacation wardrobe, and your destination, in the most amazing way.

Ever since the internet went crazy for the phenomenal Prism Highlighter, handmade by Etsy seller BitterLaceBeauty, any make-up company worth their salt has launched their own version of the rainbow highlighter. Whether they boast 5 or 6 colours, pastel or vivid, their mythical spectrum appeal makes them extremely pleasing on the eye. If the thought of sweeping a rainbow across your cheekbones is making you vision ending up with a clown face, don’t be fooled by the bold appearance of your very own compact rainbow; when applied with a powder or fan brush, the colours have an unexpected way of merging to create a light, iridescent glow. You will look refreshed and lit from within, you won’t look like you’re going to a rave!

Make-up Revolution Rainbow Highlighter, £4 at Superdrug

Make-up Revolution’s Rainbow Highlighter boasts 5 pastel shimmer shades in a generously sized, iridescent compact, and it’s under a fiver!

Beyond Paradise by Estée Lauder has been around for a number of years. The eye catching, multicoloured gradient bottle is the main attraction, and it captures the whimsical fantasy aura of this tangy floral fragrance in the most beautiful way.

Primark have the much sought after metallic gradient make-up brushes, with fish tail handles, purple tinted hairs and the ultimate shape and texture to achieve the glow of the unicorns! At £10 for a set of 5, they aren’t as pricey as similar sets. I have a feeling these beauties will sell like hot cakes!

Considering Girls With Attitude’s 9 piece Fantasy Collection, which boasts two tone gradient handles and hairs, will set you back £49.99, Primark’s offerings are set to add some serious wanderlust to dressing tables and make-up bags without straining your post-holiday purse strings.

Girls With Attitude Fantasy Collection, 9 brush set of unicorn inspired professional brushes, £49.99

GWA Mermaid Mythical 6 brush collection are not dissimilar in colour scheme to Primark’s and are truly mer-mazing, slightly cheaper at nearly £35…

Mermaid Mythical 6 brush collection, £34.99, GWA

Girls With Attitude have a variety of tools that will cater to your every face need, and they’re oh so pleasing on the eye, but at nearly £50 for a set of 9, and £35 for a set of 6, if you want a set of mer-mazing brushes but you’re watching the pennies after that beach break, look no further than Primark!

I also noticed Amazon have an amazing selection of mermaid’s tail brushes, some of which are pastel metallic, pink with gold and even rainbow, for a reasonable price.  It’s well worth a rummage on there for a wider variety at a good price range, there are some generous sellers that have thrown in free shipping too.
